Wednesday, May 14, 2008
San Diego California, May 13, 2008 - San Diego architectural firm Public, announces the naming of Principal partner, James E. Brown as a Harvard Graduate School of Design Loeb Fellow for 2009. The prestigious Loeb Fellowship is bestowed on only 10 recipients annually, selected from an international applicant pool. James is the first recipient from San Diego and joins the Fellows of 2009 selected from locations including Shanghai, China and Bhutan.
James Brown received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in 1984 after selection for participation in the architectural design program in Florence, Italy 1983. He is a licensed architect in the State of California since 1990 and is a past design instructor at both Woodbury University and the New School of Architecture & Design in San Diego, California. James is currently a Principal partner at Public Architecture plus Planning in San Diego.
The Harvard Graduate School of Design Loeb Fellowship is awarded to mid-career practitioners whose work is dedicated to the improvement of the built and natural environment. Loeb Fellows will be in residence at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) for the upcoming academic year and will participate in one year of independent study using the curriculum and programs of the Design School as well as other resources at Harvard University.
Loeb Fellowships are awarded to highly motivated individuals who can make effective use of Harvard's resources, and who will use their studies to benefit society at large. Loeb Fellows come from a diverse range of professional backgrounds in both the public and private sectorsâ€"from traditional fields such as architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning, to others whose work also concerns the urban and natural environment, such as journalists, artists and community advocates. In addition to faculty and curriculum at the Harvard Design School, Loeb Fellows also have access to curriculum at Harvard College and Harvard's other graduate schools, including the schools of government, business, education, law, public health, and arts and sciences.
Fellows pursue their interests through writing, research, and joint projects. They also serve as a resource for the Harvard Design School and other parts of Harvard University, bringing their experience and observations to the classroom, the studio, and special interest groups, and sharing with students the trends and challenges facing today's practicing design professionals.
Jim has over 23 years of experience in architecture and design and established Public Architecture plus Planning in 1989 with Principal partner James Gates. As one of two Principals, he is the design architect for a wide range of private and public clients and takes the lead in developing conceptual sketches and articulating design goals for every project at Public. The firm projects have been widely published and recognized for outstanding design throughout the architectural community. Jim has a background in fine arts and sculpture and maintains a connection to the arts world. He keeps one foot planted firmly in his roots of design and values the hands on experience. He is an artist who has chosen architecture as his medium.
In 1988, the Loeb Fellowship was recognized by the American Institute of Architects "for improving the quality of the built and natural environment through the education of the practitioners who affect that environment." Public Principal James Gates says, "The firm is proud to see Jim join those chosen as leaders in their field who will help shape the future."
